Even though Elixir as a language has been published only in 2011, its basis has been running in production since 1987. The functional language with a syntax similar to ruby is compiled to BEAM Bytecode, exactly as is Erlang. This allows to build on top of the vast programming and problem-solving experience of the Erlang community. Erlang, originating in the telecommunications sector of Ericsson, is being used in a whole variety of high availability solutions, e.g. CouchDB, Riak, Whatsapp.
